Super Rugby (rendered in the current competition logo as "Super Rugby", also colloquially referred to as "Super 15") is the largest and pre-eminent professional Rugby union competition in the Southern Hemisphere. Building off various Southern Hemisphere competitions dating back to 1986, with teams from a number of southern nations, Super Rugby officially started in 1996 with 12 teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The competition was known as Super 12 through to the end of the 2005 season; the name was changed to Super 14 with the addition of two teams for the 2006 season; with expansion to 15 teams in the three countries for the 2011 season, the competition has been re-branded as Super Rugby (no number included).

The Sharks are a South African rugby union team competing in the Super Rugby competition (Super 10, 1993 – 1995; Super 12, 1996 – 2005; Super 14, 2006 – 2010; Super Rugby 2011- ). They are based in Durban and centred around the Natal Sharks union, also based in Durban and drawing players from all of KwaZulu-Natal Province. In 1993-1995 South Africa was represented in the Super 10 by their three top unions (top three teams from the previous years Currie Cup). Natal (as they were called then) qualified in 1993 and 1994. Natal were runners-up in 1994 after having lost to Queensland 21-10 in the final. In 1996 and 1997 South Africa was represented in the Super 12 by their four top unions rather than franchises, and Natal qualified and competed both years. They have never won any of the Super Rugby competition, but have reached the final three times, as Natal in 1996 and as the Sharks in 2001 and 2007.In 2011 the Super Rugby competition was expanded again to feature an additional team from Australia changing the competition to the Super Rugby tournament. The Sharks were once again a formidable team in the early rounds of the competition but an injury to talismanic fly-half Patrick Lambie in the middle of the season caused the Sharks to lose form eventually managing to end sixth in the log and make the play-offs, losing to the Crusaders.

The Bulls for sponsorship reasons known as the Vodacom Bulls, are a South African rugby union team competing in the Super Rugby competition. They are based in Pretoria and play their home matches at Loftus Versfeld. Prior to 1998, the Bulls competed in the then-Super 12 as the Blue Bulls, as in those years South Africa was represented in the Super 12 by its top four Currie Cup unions instead of franchises. The current team captain is Pierre Spies.They also won the 2010 Super 14 which was the last of that particular competition because the competition will be upgraded to Super Rugby in 2011. They have won three super titles and is among the most successful teams in the super rugby history with three titles, a feat they share with the Blues of New Zealand. They are the most successful Super 14 team in its history, winning three out of the five titles.
